There are so many ways to train student worship leaders to become better musicians and leaders. One method that can be a fun, and possibly embarrassing, is to film your worship sets. Doing so will help you and your students see and hear things that they may have other wise never noticed.
IT WILL HELP YOUR STUDENTS SEE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE WHILE ON THE PLATFORM
Students need to see what they look like while on the platform. Though worship is not about performing, the way we appear on the platform is important. Filming your worship sets allows students to see their facial expressions, body language and the way they appear when leading worship.
IT WILL HELP YOUR STUDENTS KNOW WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE
There are many different ways of capturing your band’s audio. Remember, you do not need thousand of dollars in recording equipment to provide your students with a good clue into how they sound. The point of your video is to give them an accurate understanding of how they sound. Therefore, your recording must make it possible to hear wrong notes, vocal parts, and your instruments.
IT WILL HELPS YOU SEE YOUR PROGRESS
One of the most encouraging and valuable parts about filming your students worship sets is you have the ability to see their progress. I have videos of our student worship team that date back to when I first arrived at my church. Those days were rough! It’s nice to look back and remember how far our students have come. It’s also helpful to remind them of this fact when they need to be encouraged.
A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER
Remember when you are watching your services to not just focus on the areas your students need to improve, but to also point out the good things they have done. It can become easy to focus on the negatives and forget to mention the positives. Also, have fun watching these videos. When you and your team sit down to watch the videos together, have fun and enjoy the fellowship time. Let this be a time where you instruct and encourage your students to become the best leaders they can possibly be.
Also, please understand there is no need to film every service. I film our student team only five or six times a year. It would be nice for our students to be able to watch themselves after each service, but the time required for this to happen is not something I have available to me at this moment. So, don’t feel the pressure to film each week. Film those special youth events or when your students lead for your main church worship services.
